In-Depth Review

As an average guy in my mid-30s, gaming is a big part of my downtime. Whether it’s unwinding after work or diving into some multiplayer sessions with friends, the controller I use is vital. I finally decided to give the ASTRO Gaming C40 TR Controller a shot after hearing great things about it. This wasn’t a quick decision; I did my homework, read reviews, and I was willing to invest in something that promised a better gaming experience.

Right out of the box, I was impressed with the presentation. The packaging felt premium, which gave me a good first impression. The controller itself has a solid feel to it and isn’t overly heavy. It didn’t take long for me to appreciate the adjustable thumbsticks and the customizable layout. As someone who has some big hands, I found it comfortable to hold, with good grip texture and overall balance.

The build quality of the C40 TR is commendable. It feels robust and well-constructed, unlike some generic controllers I’ve used in the past. The materials used don’t seem cheap, and the buttons are tactile, providing a satisfying click when pressed. I also appreciated the removable components, like the thumbsticks and D-pad, which brings a whole new level of personalization.

Performance-wise, the C40 TR has truly transformed my gaming sessions. The response time is incredibly fast, and the adjustable settings are a game-changer, especially in competitive scenarios where every millisecond counts. The controller connects seamlessly, and I haven’t experienced any lag or disconnects. The battery life is decent, too; I’d say it lasts about 10-12 hours with regular use, which is sufficient for a couple of gaming nights.

In terms of daily use, it holds up exceptionally well. I’ve been using it primarily for first-person shooters and action-adventure games. The remappable buttons are super handy, allowing me to switch up my controls depending on what’s needed for different games. However, I have to admit that it took a bit of time to get adjusted to a few of the customizable features. There’s a slight learning curve, but that’s common with most high-end controllers.

I think this controller is best for serious gamers who might be playing anything from casual to professional levels. If you’re into competitive gaming or enjoy fine-tuning your setup, this is a solid investment. On the flip side, if you’re an occasional player just looking for something simple, there are cheaper options that may meet your needs better.

Pros? Well, the customization options make it versatile. The build quality seems durable, and the ergonomic design is a bonus for extended play. But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Some users have mentioned issues with price—this isn’t an inexpensive controller, and while I believe you get what you pay for, it might not fit everyone’s budget. Additionally, the complexity of features can feel overwhelming to someone who just wants to pick up and play.

Overall, I’d say the ASTRO Gaming C40 TR Controller is a solid choice for the serious gamer. It may come with a higher price tag, but the build quality and performance make it worth considering. Give it a go if you’re looking to up your game.

    Not supported,
The good:- weight, size, and feel- d pad is amazing- swapping functionality- buttons feel solid and give good feedbackThe bad:- the drivers do not work, at all. I was able to find a work around by installing Xbox controller drivers for it so that I can at least use the thing- the micro USB port is recessed and will only accommodate the cable that comes with the controller, if you lose the cable or the wireless dongle you are completely screwed- the d pad on mine is not registering certain inputs properly. This shouldn’t be an issue because it’s supposed to be replaceable, but they don’t make the replacements anymore.Overall, it feels like an amazing controller, if it was properly supported. Would be 4 stars if the drivers worked, 5 if that and replacement parts were available. Not having replacement parts renders one of the most appealing features completely pointless.I think I’m more disappointed with this guy because it could be the best controller I’ve ever had, but my experience feels like they are trying to unload as many of their broken returns as possible while providing below the bare minimum support they should be. Not having working drivers is exceptionally unacceptable. If I hadn’t found the YouTube video by some random dude explaining the work around, I never would have even been able to connect it. For $170, that’s shameful. The returns process is a pain the butt too.

    Best Joystick I’ve ever owned.
Few things:-Firstly, I was nervous about buying a refurbished product(I ALWAYS buy new) but when it arrived I realized the refurbish was done by astro witch is comforting. Buttons are snappy, paint finish is perfect and the all the cords and pieces looked brand new.–The weight and feel of the controller is subperb and while it only has 2 back panell buttons they can be customized to what ever button you prefer.—I’ve read a few of the other reviews and im seeing people have been having some trouuble with stick drift. I Dont rememeber any ps4 controllers lasting me any longer then 6months w/o drifting though, or any other controller for any other system for that matter. BUT the best thing about the c40 is all the parts are modular and can easly be replaced. My right stick lasted perfectlly up to 9 months after the original purchase then I replaced them with evil controllers replacement analogs(picked them up on amazon well)SOOOO Inconclusion buy this controller and pick up replacement stick while your at it because it not a question of IF youll get stick drift with ANY controller its a matter of WHEN.The only reason Im even buying another is becuase my first one ( I bought in 2019) is scrapped and banged up from being dropped and mishandled by my children. It still works though. this is hands down the best controller I’ve ever used.—-Astro from my understanding discontinued this controller a new unit is upwards of 300 dollars, just get it refurbished!

    Doesn’t work out of box
Had it in box brand new for a month or so. Just opened it and it isn’t working. Terrible

  4. Mike

    sticks are absolute garbage
Best controller in the world, but the sticks are garbage and will go out on you. I still bought the controller knowing this would happen but its the price you pay for the controller you get. I wont use any other controller. Its worth its headaches. Order replacement modules and youll be good!

  5. mikhail h.

    i mean.
so yeah. this controller is way better than dualsense edge and xbox series elite, yes youll be having stick drift out of the box BUT you can easily reset it by pressing the button at the back of the controller, after that, no more stick drift. everything in this world is not perfect yes i get it, some of yall dont like it and some of yall like em, i respect that, im using this controller for almost 3 years and never have a complain about it. good for fps games such as cod, apex.

  6. Dustin morretti

    Not worth it
I bought at least 5 of these Astro controllers. EVERY-TIME I buy one it’s a little defective, L3 stick, always slouching, blue tooth SOMETIMES WORK, it’s just best to look into a different scuff controller, don’t waste time or money on this.

  7. Product o button didn’t work and missing one of the screw drivers

    Terrible
    I want my money back

  8. Tahj Burch

The controller started bugging out like an 2 hours in
The controller is a great controller, but the controller was fine for an hour, but after I remap the buttons in the back, an hour later, the controller started bugging out. RB bumper or the right bumper started not reacting when I was clicking I will click it once and it would double click and then click Iit again it wouldn’t wouldn’t do anything. I later started to do my research on the controller and I found a lot of people had this problem and some people would say to try to update the controller and I would update the controller and that would not work either it was I will still have the same problem. Do not buy the controller because you’re going to have some problems sadly but if you don’t have any problems, the controller is really good. You just kinda have to be lucky since you’re getting a refurbished item.
