In-Depth Review
As a guy in my mid-30s who’s never really paid much attention to skincare, I decided it was time to invest a bit more in my daily routine. After all, I didn’t want to look like I just rolled out of bed all the time. I stumbled upon the Avène Tolerance Control Soothing Skin Recovery Cream while searching for something that wouldn’t irritate my sensitive skin, and I finally took the plunge. Here’s my honest take after using it for a few weeks.
First impressions were positive. The packaging is simple, yet manages to feel sophisticated—definitely not what I expected from a skincare product. The cream is a soft, white substance, which looks pretty unassuming. I’ve used enough products to know that if it looks too fancy, it might not do what I need. But this seemed promising right off the bat.
When it comes to build quality and design, the container is solid. It comes in a pump bottle, which is great because it prevents contamination. I can appreciate that the design blends functionality and hygiene. It dispenses the right amount, so there’s little waste, and I love not having to worry about digging my fingers into a jar.
Now onto performance and daily use. I usually apply it after washing my face, and I found that a little goes a long way. It glides on smoothly and absorbs quickly—no greasy feeling left behind. My skin tends to get dry, especially during these colder months, so I was pleasantly surprised at how well it moisturized without clogging my pores. I’ve also noticed fewer flare-ups, which is a massive win for me.
I think this cream is best suited for folks with sensitive skin or anyone dealing with irritation—be it from weather changes, shaving, or even stress. You don’t have to be a skincare expert to appreciate how soothing it feels. Even if you’re like me and just looking for something reliable, this product might just fit the bill.
To wrap things up, there are some pros and cons to consider. On the plus side, it’s effective, soothing, and won’t break the bank. It’s well-formulated, and you get a good amount of product without feeling like you’re being ripped off. However, on the flip side, the scent is quite subtle, and some might miss that refreshing burst of fragrance that other creams offer—although I personally enjoy it as it minimizes irritation.
Overall, I’d recommend Avène Tolerance Control Soothing Skin Recovery Cream if you’re on the hunt for a dependable solution for sensitive skin. It’s made my daily routine smoother and keeps my skin in check. If you’re looking for something straightforward and effective without the frills, this might be a solid addition to your bathroom shelf.

I Just Want to Help People With Skin Problems!
I so wish I had known about this skincare line a long time ago, but just glad I did find it at all. I have rosacea (including ocular rosacea) diagnosed by a dermatologist. I had been through all the typical stores and websites, trying so many things over the last 15 years. Yes, most were supposed to be for people with skin problems. EVERY SINGLE TIME I tried something, within five minutes, my skin was bright red. My skin reacted to EVERYTHING. I started to believe there was not one single product on the entire planet that my skin would not react to! It was so frustrating. Purchase, fail, repeat. Thing is, I had tried their spring water spray. I sort of ignored all the other products until I was talking to someone randomly and they asked if I had tried Avene. Honestly I decided maybe this was providence and that I had better try it just to be on the safe side. What would life be like if I had ignored their advice and not tried it? If this company ever goes out of business, I will have to live with terrible skin because I already know there is nothing else out there. I had read a review whereby someone said their doctor told them the longer they used the products, the better their skin would get. This is completely true. But even initially, all I cared was that I could relieve the dryness with SOMETHING that did not turn my skin RED IMMEDIATELY! Even THAT, I would have been happy with! Now for the rest of the benefits. I had the good intuition to purchase two of these when they were on sale. I am so glad I did. I use it like crazy every chance I get. It just feels so good going on and I like touching my skin even after the product dissipates. No redness, no irritation, it actually CALMS my skin. And makes it like, well, “real skin.” I’m glad I also got the thicker version in the tube, Cicalfate. This is my go-to for dryer areas and in the winter. The two together along with the water spray, if you like to use something like that, are a great overall program. Definitely other things I would like to try. Again, my goal was to help others who have skin problems because everything else out there has no concept whatsoever of calming the skin, but the exact opposite — irritating it worse (even if those products are supposed to help with redness or irritation). And I felt the company truly deserves a shout-out because they GET IT when it comes to skincare products. Whatever they’ve done, they are experts, far more than all the other skincare lines and I don’t care how long those have been around. If it doesn’t immediately tell you your skin “likes it” and shows it by not reacting or immediately getting better, why on earth would you pay your hard-earned money to buy it and keep using it? It’s worth every penny, don’t bat an eyelash, your skin is worth that and more. If it’s on sale, get a lot of it because trust me, you are going to want and need it. You will be so glad you got more than one. I definitely am! THANK YOU, AVENE, WE LOVE YOU HERE IN AMERICA! YOU UNDERSTAND SKINCARE LIKE NO OTHER COMPANY!Update: Wanted to comment that I’m still so grateful for a product that does FAR MORE than what you expect! I recently bought more. I watch my skin calm down the minute I put it on. I don’t know entirely how the ingredients do what they do, but to the company … please don’t fix what isn’t broken! Too many companies have a good thing and then change it. Please don’t, the products are perfect and far beyond expectation! I also wanted to mention it seems the Tolerance tube will get EVERY LAST BIT out, you won’t be wondering if there is anything left you are discarding. The Cicalfate tube is a bit different, it’s more like a squeeze tube. But I feel I can still get the product out to use it all. That said, you get your money’s worth. I’m also starting to use the Cicalfate on my hands in the winter, too (which are sadly starting to show my age). But this product line has literally CHANGED MY LIFE! BUY IT, it’s the REAL DEAL!

Gentle and effective recovery cream
I’ve been using Avene Control Soothing Skin Recovery Cream for a few months now, and I’m genuinely impressed. The texture is rich but not heavy, and it absorbs quickly without leaving my skin greasy. It instantly calms irritation making my skin feel comfortable and hydrated throughout the day. After consistent use, my skin looks healthier, smoother, and more balanced. It’s especially great for sensitive or stressed skin, and a little goes a long way. This has definitely become a staple in my skincare routine, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a gentle yet effective recovery cream.

The ONLY moisturizer I tried that was so soothing on my raw, irritated skin.
The ONLY moisturizer I found that did not sting while using a chemo cream, efudex, on my face. I tried all the dermatologist recommended sensitive skin moisturizers and although nice, still would sting a little bit. I had a sample of this product, looked it up and found it was good to use when using efudex. This cream was so gentle, moisturizing with no stinging at all! Better than vanicream or others that were recommended. I don’t know if I will use this cream daily once my face has healed as it was costly, but I will DEFINITELY use it when needed in the future and look up other products by this company.

Avène tolerance control a must try
I’ve been using Avène tolerance control for a few weeks now, and the difference in my skin is unbelievable. The texture is rich without being heavy, and it absorbs beautifully. My skin feels soothed, hydrated, and noticeably softer from the very first application. What I love most is how gentle and calming it is—especially on days when my skin feels irritated or sensitive. Redness is reduced, dry patches are gone, and my complexion looks healthier overall. It feels like the product truly nourishes instead of just sitting on the surface. If you’re looking for a reliable moisturizer that delivers both comfort and visible results, Avène is absolutely worth trying. I’m very happy with it and will definitely continue using it!

May or may not be enough moisture depending, but great for sensitive skin types
EDIT 2:So Paula’s Choice Calm Cream broke me out and I had to go back to this. I ended up just using more of it, which isn’t too cost effective but I moved to a warmer climate and now I use it for when my skin has a dry period (say before my monthly) and this finally works well again. My main cream now is the Hey Honey cream since we’re in the summer now (it can be a little drying compared to this) and the Avene cream when Ineed extra moisture.EDIT:I found that in winter, this cream wasn’t moisturizing enough and my skin would start to dry up, itch, and cause me to start flaring up due to the dryness. I found that Paula’s Choice Calm cream works better for me in this regard. So if you’re pretty dry skinned, I’d skip this entirely.ORIGINAL REVIEW:I have rosacea and dry, highly sensitive skin. The only cream that my skin tolerates so far is the Tatcha Indigo cream, which is HELLA expensive. I was using the balm version of this but that didn’t moisturize my skin enough and eventually the dryness was causing my skin to flare up. I use this cream in combination with the balm and I no longer need to search for creams. I am very happy with Avene, especially that it’s much cheaper than Tatcha. I have used the cream by itself and feel that it would work fine for dry skin. If you want to “seal” it, use the balm. But I really feel that it would moisturize enough for any skin type.

The best moisturizer out there!
This is the best year-round moisturizer EVER. I have had problems with breakouts and cystic acne all my life, and this is the only moisturizer that leaves my skin feeling hydrated and refreshed the whole day. It is not oily at all and absorbs quickly, while leaving your skin feeling smooth like a baby, honestly. The tube is not huge, but it’s not tiny. I do wish it were a little more affordable, but for the quality, it does make sense, and I would say you do get your value for your money. It does its job perfectly, and I’ve been a repeat buyer for years.
